Auction Report - 20th Century DecArts at CNY

Christies 1634 lot 55
This month’s 20th Century Decorative Arts sale at Christies New York brought four more antique Donegals to market. Lot 27, a simplified version of the popular Ushak-style design attributed to Alexander Morton’s nephew Gavin Morton, and lot 42, a “Donnemara”, were marginal performers with condition issues. Lot 57, an attractive a rose and trellis design possibly attributed to Ann MacBeth on stylistic grounds, was a steal at $6000. The surprise of the sale was lot 55, a squarish plain-field carpet with a border of large alternating leaves reminiscent of the main border in the “Lisburn” attributed to C.F.A. Voysey. This carpet sold for more than $32,000, which is a high price for a lesser-known Donegal. (Click image to enlarge.)
